Privacy Policy
Afterglow does not track what you read. Personal notes are stored on your device and synchronised using Apple CloudKit. They are not sent to Afterglow’s Firebase quote backend.
1. Overview
Afterglow is a daily quotes app for iPhone with lightweight notes and journalling. This policy explains what data the app processes, where it is stored, and the choices available to you.
2. Quotes you view and save
Simply viewing a quote does not create a reading-history record. Afterglow creates a saved entry only when you deliberately like a quote or write a note against it.
A saved entry may contain the quote’s identifier, text and author snapshot, quote date, like state, your note, and creation or update dates.
3. Storage and iCloud synchronisation
Saved entries are stored locally on your device using Apple’s SwiftData framework. They are synchronised between your devices through Apple CloudKit using your iCloud account. Your preference for the optional streak feature is also synchronised through CloudKit; the streak count is calculated from qualifying saved entries rather than stored as analytics.
Afterglow has no separate account system: there is no Afterglow email-and-password account, custom user profile, or authentication backend. Personal notes, saved entries, and streak data are not sent to Afterglow’s Firebase backend.
4. Editorial quote content
Afterglow uses Google Firebase Firestore to provide editorial quote content, including quote text, author, categories, attribution, and scheduling information. The app treats this content service as read-only.
The Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets may independently request quote text and author from Firestore so they can work without the main app having been opened recently. Firestore is not used for user accounts, personal notes, saved entries, or streak data.
5. Analytics, tracking, and diagnostics
Afterglow does not currently use analytics or tracking services, advertising SDKs, behavioural profiling, or third-party analytics. It does not track which quotes you merely view.
Afterglow also does not currently use Firebase Crashlytics, a third-party crash-reporting SDK, or separately implemented diagnostic-data collection. Apple may process App Store or device diagnostics under its own policies and settings.
6. Device permissions and notifications
Afterglow currently requests no access to your location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos, health data, Bluetooth, or notifications. CloudKit synchronisation uses the app’s iCloud capability rather than a normal runtime permission prompt.
Afterglow currently sends no notifications or engagement reminders. The optional streak feature does not use notifications.
7. Purchases
Afterglow uses Apple StoreKit 2 for monthly and yearly subscriptions and a lifetime purchase. Apple processes purchases and payment information. Afterglow checks StoreKit transaction and entitlement information to determine whether Premium access is active, but does not receive or store your payment-card details.
8. Sharing
You can choose to share quote content using the standard iOS share sheet. Sharing is initiated by you; Afterglow does not automatically send content to social networks or other third parties.
9. Data retention and deletion
You can delete saved entries from within the app. Un-liking a quote deletes its saved entry, including any note associated with it.
Deletions made on your device synchronise through CloudKit according to Apple’s SwiftData and CloudKit synchronisation behaviour. Copies may remain temporarily in Apple-managed backups or systems in accordance with Apple’s retention practices.
10. Third-party services
| Service | Purpose | Privacy information |
|---|---|---|
| Apple iCloud / CloudKit | Synchronises saved entries and the streak preference between your devices | Apple Privacy Policy |
| Apple App Store / StoreKit | Processes purchases and provides entitlement status | Apple Privacy Policy |
| Google Firebase / Firestore | Provides read-only editorial quote content to the app and widgets | Firebase privacy information |
11. Children
Afterglow is not directed at children under the age of 13. It has no child-specific features or child account system, and the developer does not knowingly collect personal data from children.
12. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, the updated version will be published on this page with a revised effective date. If analytics or another form of data collection is introduced, this policy will be updated before that functionality is released.
